Geoff Tyler
B. Com, CA(New Zealand), CPA(Australia)

Geoff qualified with a Bachelor of Commerce from Auckland University in 1972. He became a full member of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1978 and a Certified Practising Accountant in Australia in 1983.

His work experience started with Smith & Nephew (NZ) Ltd (manufacturers of Elastoplast, Nivea and Hospital medical packs) and was followed by a period of temporary assignments in the UK. Back in New Zealand he joined a national firm of Chartered Accountants, Hogg Young Cathie and Co, before leaving for further overseas experience in Australia in 1977. He held the position of Group Accountant for Swift & Co Ltd and then Financial Accountant for Masterfoods of Australia Pty Ltd returning to New Zealand in 1986 where he rejoined Hogg Young Cathie & Co. He became a Partner of the firm in 1989 and left in December 1992 to set up his own chartered accounting practice.

A key role for Geoff is to ensure that the practices and systems within the office provide a consistent and high quality service to clients. A service that reflects empathy with our clients, so that we are thinking of the solution to an issue perhaps even before our client realises one exists. It's challenging as the practice has many clients and everyone  in the practice is always busy, but nevertheless it is the service level to which the firm is dedicated. We are also dedicated to being well informed. Training seminars are regular events and 12 months ago we joined a practice advisory service from which we draw much sound theory in the form of practice systems but also many guides, flowcharts, forms, and advisory material that is improving the practice operations and the services we provide to our clients. It particularly helps to ensure that the advice from the practice is consistent and sound. The practice also uses the Banklink software extensively and therefore receives data electronically that is semi processed at the time of the downloading procedure. The practice also readily utilises tax specialists if deemed necessary.

Geoff overviews all of the financial statements, tax returns, GST returns and correspondence that leaves the office. He also reviews every accounting file. He is always available for advice and often acts in an advisory role as clients transition through business sales or acquisitions, or business start-ups, or become involved in re-structuring, all of which give rise to transactions that can have important tax consequences.
